The Reason For Choosing Silk and Other Materials

Aslıhan, unlike earlier artists, prefers to work with more fluid and delicately textured silk fabrics. She aims to bring this ancient art beyond the confines of book pages and into everyday life. By gracefully applying traditional illumination motifs onto everyday objects such as panels and silk shawls, she transforms the art into something living and tangible.

Through this approach, she brings both functionality and contemporary visibility to the art of illumination.

Her primary materials are silk and gold. She applies 18, 22, and 24 karat gold using classical techniques such as grinding and gilding, and also incorporates complementary materials like gold leaf and silk paint. Her works feature motifs inspired by mother-of-pearl inlay, woodcraft, bookbinding, marble art, ceramics, and traditional textile patterns. A selection of these motifs has been published in her authored book on Ottoman ornamental arts. Additionally, she carefully selects silk types

produced with various weaving techniques— based on quality, texture, and regional characteristics—incorporating unique silks from regions such as Ödemiş, Hatay, and Bursa into her works.
